Start an Alumni Chapter
Alumni Relations recommends having a minimum of 100 alumni in a geographic area or affinity group before starting a new chapter to ensure adequate alumni support for planning and attending activities. Here are the steps to get you started:
- Contact Alumni Relations. Alumni Relations is here to help you succeed, so let us know if you’re interested in starting a chapter. We will provide you with a list of alumni in your area or affinity group to help you recruit membership.
- Invite all of the alumni on the list to an initial organizational meeting. Alumni Relations can assist with the invitation. Your first meeting should address the goals of the chapter, explain the leadership positions and their duties, and set a date for a kickoff event.
- Plan and host a kickoff event with the assistance of Alumni Relations. Follow up with attendees, and continue to meet as necessary for one or two more events in the coming year.
- Apply for a charter. After one year from the initial organizational meeting, the chapter must apply to the Alumni Association Board of Directors for a charter. Chapters may not exist independently of the Alumni Association or the law school, and groups and organizations separate from the Alumni Association may not use the South Texas College of Law Houston logo or name in fundraising or related activities. At least 12 members of the group must sign the Chapter Guidelines document – provided by the Director of Alumni Relations – and a president and vice president must be selected. The application will be reviewed and voted on by the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Alumni Relations staff is available to assist with this process, as needed.
