Alumni Association Award Recipients Announced

The South Texas college of Law Alumni Association will honor Judge Jay W. Burnett '73 as its 2013 Distinguished Alumnus at the organization's Annual Meeting and Luncheon, to be held on October 11. The Alumni Association honors one graduate each year for his or her service to the College, the profession, and the community.

A dedicated criminal defense attorney as well as a senior retired criminal district court judge, Burnett is a true advocate of the people. Practicing in both the state and federal courts, he handles all aspects of criminal law, from misdemeanors to death penalty cases.  A veteran of the bench for more than 15 years, Burnett was appointed judge of the 351st Criminal District Court in 1984 by then-governor Mark White, and was elected to the 183rd Criminal District Court in 1986. He served on the latter bench for 12 years before retiring, undefeated, in 1999 and becoming a visiting judge. As judge of those two courts, Burnett presided over more than 15,000 cases, and had a reversal rate that was among the lowest in Harris County.

Burnett's commitment to the poor and underserved is evidenced by his service as a member, since 2002, of the State Bar's Legal Needs of the Poor in Criminal Matters Committee; a member, since 2004, of the National Committee on the Right to Counsel; chair, from 1999 to 2002, of the State Bar's Committee on the Death Penalty; and chair, from 1995 to 1998, of the 2nd Judicial Administrative Region's Committee on the Death Penalty. Burnett also lends his expertise as a board member of the Texas Center for the Judiciary, which provides education and training to Texas appellate, district, and county court-at-law judges.

Julianne Holt '80, who will receive the Alumni Association's Public Service Award, and the new officers and directors of the Alumni Association Board of  Directors will also be honored at the Annual Meeting.
