South Texas College of Law/Houston alumni honored at State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting
South Texas College of Law (STCL) was well-represented by our outstanding alumni at the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting held June 18 – 19, 2015 in San Antonio, Texas. More than 50 alumni attended a reception on June 18 where Donald J. Guter, President and Dean, offered remarks on the law school, including an update on the front construction project which started in March.
Barapalooza Schedule Released for July 2015 Bar Exam
In an effort to assist STCL’s alumni taking the upcoming July 2015 Texas bar exam, several STCL faculty members will provide a FREE supplemental lecture series to alumni. The three-day program is designed to practically tackle several key areas of the exam and strategies to handle essay questions on each. Those STCL students/alumni taking the July bar exam are encouraged to attend, free of charge, and take advantage of this unique opportunity.
NAACP Houston Branch Presents Award to South Texas College of Law/Houston
The NAACP Houston Branch has given South Texas College of Law/Houston an award for its “generous support” of the local organization. The beautiful award plaque also was given to the law school for its efforts in hosting and sponsoring a reception in conjunction with the NAACP’s National Convention in 2012, which was held in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center, said alumnus Goodwille Pierre ’00.
Gov. Abbott Appoints South Texas Alumna Debra Ibarra Mayfield to Judicial Post
Judge Debra Ibarra Mayfield, a 1999 graduate of South Texas College of Law/Houston, has been appointed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to serve as judge of the 165th Judicial District Court in Harris County.
South Texas College of Law Receives Grant to Open New Immigration Clinic
To provide quality and affordable legal assistance to the under-served immigrant community, South Texas College of Law/Houston is establishing a new immigration clinic that will be funded in part by a grant of nearly $200,000 from the Houston Endowment.
South Texas Trial Advocacy Program Ranked in Top 10 by U.S. News & World Report
South Texas College of Law/Houston’s award-winning Trial Advocacy Program has been ranked in the Top 10 once again by U.S. News & World Report in its annual survey of law schools. South Texas is one of only three schools in the nation whose Trial Advocacy Program has been ranked in the magazine’s Top 10 every year since the specialty rankings began in 1995.
South Texas' Oil & Gas Law Insitute Named in Memory of Late Professor Harry L. Reed
South Texas College of Law/Houston has named its new Oil & Gas Law Institute in memory of Harry L. Reed, a legendary professor and general counsel who served the school with distinction and dedication for more than six decades.
Memorial Service for STCL Dean Emeritus and Professor William L. Wilks
South Texas College of Law Dean Emeritus and Professor William "Bill" L. Wilks passed away on February 24. A memorial service will be held March 20 at 3 p.m. at the Emerson Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 1900 Bering Drive in Houston.
